Birthday Girl

It’s happened again.  One of my sweet children has gone and gotten older.  I would say our sweet little Myah turned 7 but somehow those words and that number just don’t go together.  She’s not little anymore!  But she is still sweet!  Myah turned 7 while Julie was here and it was such a joyous occasion!  Here’s the birthday girl . . .

It’s still hard to believe that it’s been seven years since Myah was born, introducing us to the wonderful world of parenting.  She’s such a joy to have in the family and it really tugs on my heart strings to see her growing up so quickly and becoming this little lady instead of a little girl.  She’s a lot of fun to have around and is such a good big sister.  She especially looks out for Aaron and can’t wait to see him at the end of her school day.  She loves to read.  She can often be found with her nose in a book and I couldn’t be happier about it.  She loves to draw and color and do art projects.  She also loves to play outside.  She’s very good company and I’m missing her desperately this week after having her home for the school holidays.

I think she had a pretty fantastic birthday weekend.  It’s a very rare and special treat to have family in town on these occasions and Julie really made a difference in the weekend.  It was SO FUN to get to share Myah’s special day with J!  (Julie and Ryan’s anniversary is also on Myah’s birthday so that adds to the excitement of the day!)  Myah had her friend party the day before her birthday.  It was a music theme party so the girls played musical games, made microphones, got multi-colored hair,  and had some guitar cake . . .

Pay no attention to goofy me in the photo above–just wanted you to get an idea of the microphones the girls made that Kam is working on.

Everybody had a good time and the fun continued the next day–Myah’s actual birthday.  She had breakfast in bed, went on the traditional hunt for presents, enjoyed her chosen birthday meal of chicken tacos, and the evening ended with more cake . . .of course :)

We love you, Myah and we’re so glad you enjoyed your special day.  Happy Birthday!

Shock and Awesome!

A few weeks ago I was just having a regular Thursday.  I suppose it wasn’t completely regular as I was getting exorbitant amounts of housecleaning done despite having three of the kidlets at home. But we had an inspection the next morning and so it had to be done.  (My feelings on inspections can be saved for another post that I will probably never bother writing.)  It was lunch time and Chris came home from a “meeting.”  This wasn’t unusual because he was in between terms and had no classes to teach.  A couple of minutes after Chris came in there was a knock on the door.  Chris said he couldn’t get it, despite my desperate plea for help as I was still in pajamas.  So, reluctantly, I headed for the door wondering who I was going to have to justify my disheveled appearance to and this was the glorious face that stared back at me . . .

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?  I think I actually started screaming that over and over.  I was in complete shock!  Chris, who has (and probably already had before this) secured his spot for husband-of-the-year, flew Julie in completely without me knowing it!  I was screaming and hugging Julie, and doubled over in complete disbelief.  Thankfully, I kept it together enough to not drop Aaron, but only just!  I now truly know the feeling of not being able to believe my eyes.  It took me a full few minutes to really process what was going on.  My sister, who I had probably just talked to a couple days before at her house, was standing in my living room!!!!  I’ve never been so surprised in my life.

The two weeks that followed were pretty magical.  J and I hadn’t seen each other for two years–might as well be a lifetime when you’re as tight as we are.  Go from being oceans apart to being under the same roof for two weeks and you’ve got a recipe for fabulous, my friends.  We talked, ate good food, saw some sights, talked, played with the kids, baked, put together and carried out a birthday (which will be another post), and fell asleep talking, more than once.  My sweet sister is one of my favorite people in the world, and it meant the world to me that she’d come all the way down here, all by her lonesome, to see us!  A special thanks, also, to my dear BIL Ryan for going without her for two whole weeks.

So, what did we get up to while she was here?  What we didn’t would be a shorter list but let’s see the photo reel, shall we?

Firstly, these two got to meet!  Suffice it to say that they got along swimmingly . . .

Thanks to J’s mad skills, the WHOLE family got a hair cut.

There were picnics, bird feedings, and visits with Aussie wildlife . . .

Did I mention Julie worked her little tail off while she was here?  She brought all the goods for some tie dye fun . . .

She made 70 of these little goodies for Myah to take to school for her birthday treats . . .

She babysat. She cleaned. She decorated for parties.  She made party favors.  She did hair-do after hair-do.  She prepared meals.  She fed kids. She helped with school drop-offs and pick-ups.  She helped with bedtime.  She showered the family with gifts. She was very popular and put up with LOTS of attention from her adoring fans . . .

We went up in the mountains, down to the city, in the country to a wildlife sanctuary, and out to the coast to see some beautiful views . . .

I could go on and on with pictures and commentary.  We took hundreds of photos and made piles of memories that we can cherish until we’re reunited again!  Having Julie here was nothing short of blessed and blissful and I will remember this sweet experience forever.  Thank you, Chris, for making it all happen and thank you, J,  for being willing to go through all the trouble of coming, getting time off, spending hours on end on a plane, etc, etc.  It’s no small thing in my book!  Until we see you again, our little clan down here will be missing you everyday!

Mr. 7

I really wanted to do a six month post for Aaron. Now he’s over 7 months and I’m just getting to it! I can’t believe how fast he is growing. He is still such a delight and such a wonderful addition to the family. He keeps us all smiling and laughing on a daily basis!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I just can’t believe how quickly 7 months has gone by. I still sort of think of Aaron as new yet he’s rolling all over the place, eating lots of solid food, sitting some, and he’s currently bigger than the girls were when they were 1, so there isn’t much tiny about him! But he’s still my little man and I’m so thankful for him. I’m so grateful that he’s part of our family!

Easter Time

Let’s not dwell on how long ago Easter was and move right onto the Happy Easter!  We hope you all had a happy and splendid one.  We sure did.  Festivities actually started on the Friday before Easter.  We headed out of town for the day.  We didn’t make it to our original destination due to a bout of sickness in the car on the way, but we went to a seaside town not too far from here that has been added to an ever-growing list of our favorite places!  Even though it was a rainy day and nearly everything was closed for Good Friday, we stumbled upon an arcade that provided a lot of fun!

The sun was nice enough to come out in the early afternoon so we enjoyed the local botanical gardens.

These sculptures are all over this town and we all got a kick out of them!

Saturday we were back at home and it was definitely Easter time at the Brown house! The day started off with some egg hunting.  Thanks again Mom for the super-cool soccer eggs!

In the afternooon we got on to egg dying.  I don’t know where the tradition of egg dying started, but that person really knew what they were doing.  It’s so much fun!

Easter Sunday was a gorgeous day from start to finish.  It was extra special since it was Aaron’s first Easter! He and the girls all got baskets of goodies and everyone was pretty excited! After all the basket fun we headed to church.  I was thankful the kidlets were still such good sports about photos after church.

We got to have dinner with some friends that evening.  Thanks guys!  The girls even got another egg hunt.  Easter is such a special day and I’m so thankful that Aaron’s first one got to be so special filled with happy memories and sweet experiences.

Woman of the Year

Sometimes I hear of some woman being awarded “Woman of the Year.”  These are often, it seems, celebrities or some woman in the public eye, etc.  I’m not saying none of these woman deserves the award, but I do find myself asking, “What did she do to earn that besides host a talk show or sing well or look good on camera?” I know, shame on me for being a skeptic.  But I present to you my vote for woman of the year . . .

Yes, indeed–my own dear mother (pictured here having a picnic in England with My and Kam).  Unlike the aforementioned women, I can give you thousands of reasons why my mom deserves to be woman of the year.  Let’s begin-

  • She had to put up with me for 20 years until Chris stepped in and saved the day.  Enough said!
  • She can put together a full-blown, class-act of a puppet show in a matter of minutes.
  • She makes THE BEST grilled cheese sandwiches.
  • She can make ANY Halloween costume you want including (but not limited to) a sandwich, a 50’s girl, a box of laundry detergent, a tube of toothpaste, a M&M, a cheerleader . . .the list goes on and on.
  • She can make you an amazing Strawberry Shortcake (as in the character) birthday cake complete with piles of perfect icing ringlets.
  • She is the most selfless person I’ve ever known.
  • She has come to help after the births of all our children, an even bigger feat when your four babies were born on three different continents.
  • She will always be my #1 fan.
  • She is an amazing Grandmother–absolutely amazing.  Again, this is not easy to do when you live thousands of miles away.
  • She can sing, dance, write, arrange flowers, clean, and decorate like nobody’s business–possibly all at the same time!
  • She picked up driving on the left side of the road AND shifting left-handed on her first attempt–faster than anyone I’ve ever seen.
  • She can make you feel like you’re the most special person on the face of the planet.
Look folks, I could go on and on and on.  Those of you who know her know exactly what I’m talking about.  Those of you who don’t know her are missing out.  And that is why I vote Cindy Taylor for Woman of the Year-every year.
Happy Mother’s Day Mom!  I LOVE YOU!

Campin’ Out

Hurray for Young Women’s Camp!  Aaron and I had the priviledge of attending camp this past week and I’m so glad we did.  I always loved camp growing up and I feel pretty lucky to get the chance to go again!  Before I go any further, I want to thank my Superman of a husband for making this possible.  He took two full precious days off from PhD work time to allow me to go and I am so grateful!

Here is the campsite coming together:

I’d also like to give a big thank you to our Stake leaders for organizing such a fantastic camp.  It was very well done.  And thanks to those of you who helped get the campsite up and running!  Aaron and I went for two of the three and a half days and I wish we could have stayed longer.  He had pretty much had it by then but he was such a little trooper!

Being the only boy it’s only fair that Aaron should get to be first at something, right?  Well, he got to go camping before any of his sisters has!  He spent a fair amount of time in the front carrier but managed to get some naps in too.  He was quite popular and got passed around from one young woman to the next.  He got to see the challenge course first-hand, and he seemed to enjoy spending so much time outside.  The weather really worked out for us.  It only rained a little and it wasn’t too hot or too cold.  Somehow he even slept through the night; even through a late-night scream-fest from a group of girls that found some creepy crawlies in their tent!

Chris and the girls dropped us off at camp and picked us up so that they could have the car while we were gone.  It was so fun to show them around the camp and let the girls try out some of the challenge course.  I knew they would love it!

I have many photos of the young women but didn’t think they’d want to be plastered on my personal blog, so those are on Facebook if you’re interested.  Camp was a great experience and we’ll all be sharing the stories for a long time!

Lovin’ It

Who says you have to post about holidays right after they happen?  Shoot, I don’t even think I have Christmas on here yet.  Let’s see if I can take care of Valentine’s day!  I LOVE Valentine’s Day!  It’s so much fun to celebrate the wonderful thing that is LOVE!

To start it all off we got some LOVE air mailed to us.  The girls LOVED coming out to find prizes from Grandma and Grandpa at their breakfast places.  Aren’t packages from home the greatest? Then we had a special LOVE day breakfast of scones with cream and jam, heart-shaped watermelon slices, and pink milk.  Yummy and festive all at the same time!

It was a LOVE filled day!  We made quite a few heart-shaped sugar cookies for the young women at church and some to keep at home of course.  After church the girls made a LOVEly heart table runner to have for our Valentine’s dinner.  I can’t believe I didn’t get a picture of it.  We had so much fun that we even ran out of time for our heart jell-o pudding cups for dessert.  Somehow I didn’t get a picture of those either.  It was a great day and I hope this finds all of you feeling very LOVED!

Evacu-cation

It’s no secret that I love this beautiful country. I’m as big a fan of Australia as you’ll ever find!  Having said that, there is one thing, or should I say lots of small things, that I’m not that crazy about.  Australia has an abundance of spiders.  It’s also no secret that I’m terrified of spiders.  Before we moved here I’d lie awake at night but not from worrying about moving so far from family or about taking our family to another unfamiliar place where we didn’t know anyone or any of that.  I’d lie awake worrying about the spiders.  Not only are they plentiful, some are down right nasty–incredibly poisonous.  Last summer we had a moderate amount of spiders in the house but only two of the really bad ones.  This year we weren’t so lucky.  We got several of the two most poisonous kinds in Melbourne in the house or right outside the windows.  Yikes!  After a few weeks of this, enough was enough and we got an exterminator on the scene.  (I’m realizing this is probably too much background for a simple post about a day out.) You couldn’t pay me enough to do that guy’s job!  Anyway, having him come meant we had to be out of the house for the day.  Sounds like a good deal to me!  Someone else takes care of the bugs and we get a family day together.  That’s what I call a win-win!

We started at a nearby park that has been a family favorite from the first time we went.  It has an amazing playground and a massive train engine that the kids can climb on and play in.

From here we went up in the mountains to what has become a favorite spot and a must-see for our out-of-town visitors.  It’s a beautiful place with gorgeous gardens, fun picnic spots, and a view that can’t be missed.  You can see all the way to downtown Melbourne.  It was a hazy day but you can make out a faint city skyline in the back left of the photo below.

The first photo in the next group shows all the Brown girls in the Wishing Tree.  I think it’s amazing how the trunk of this tree has formed a circle!  The legend is that if you look through the circle and make a wish it will come true.  All three girls tried that out.

From here we went to another favorite park.  Those photos need some editing before I can add them.  It was a really fun day and we came home to a bug-free house!  Yippee!
